A Real-Time Analysis of Jordan Peele’s “Get Out”

The following are the interpretations and observations I made while watching the movie. The orders are out of place and organized by recurring themes. Enjoy.

Uncharted Territory

Chris mentions he himself as a black man is an “uncharted territory” for the family of his girlfriend, Rose. And later, he steps into an uncharted territory where a deer is hit by their car – which is much more stronger than a deer.

Dean and Deers

Dean, Rose’s father, is bothered by the deers around the area, and says many of them should die. Seemingly a joke, but a strong opinion for one to have.

Chris turns the stuffed lion’s head away from him. Chris is the deer, vulnerable in every way, while the place he is staying in is biding its time like a lion.

Later in the movie, the taxidermy of a deer stares back at Chris while he is helpless and tied to a chair. He is now like the deer that was hit by a car.

The Workers

Everything from the 30's music playing in the beginning of the movie to the presence of Walter and Georgina remind us of the time when slavery and segregation were prominent. Even the garments, the hairdo and the demeanor of the workers are reminiscent of this.

Furthermore, Chris seems to be the only one who appreciates Georgina, when the others only seem to notice her mistake.

The Counseling Session

If Jeremy is an alcoholic, why didn’t his mother try to hypnotize and fix him?

The Sunken Place

Are Georgina, Walter and Logan too, in the sunken place?

Cars

An unknown man who appears in the beginning (which turns out to be Andre/Logan) is put in the trunk of a car after being choked. A deer is hit by the car that Rose and Chris were in. Chris’s mother was killed by a car. What significance does a car hold here?

Later, Georgina is hit by the car Chris is driving. And the audience finds out that Rose’s grandmother is the one occupying Georgina’s body.

Chris didn’t do anything for his mom when she was hit by a car, and he did the same to Rose – doing nothing when this time, he was perfectly capable of doing something. He now has taken the power back.

“Get Out”

Andre’s statement, “get out” was a warning to Chris. But it could also be seen as Andre begging for the other consciousness overtaking him to get out of his head and the body.

The Bingo Game

The bingo game that the relatives play turns out to be an auction for Chris, which is reminiscent of how slaves were sold in the past.

Final Thoughts

What an outstanding package of thrills, plot twists, psychological horror and most importantly, satire. Hoping for the day when all those who are oppressed can take back the power like Chris did, without having to fight violently like he did.
